How to launch a fintech affiliate program.
A fintech affiliate program pays publishers for outcomes, usually a funded account, an approved application or a qualified lead, so it scales with less risk than most paid channels. Launching one well comes down to five decisions: the conversion you pay on, the partner mix, the commercial terms, compliance review, and how you will tell good partners from bad ones.
Why do fintechs use affiliate marketing?
Because you pay for results. Comparison sites, finance publishers, creators and other fintechs send customers who are already shopping for a product like yours, and you pay when they convert. For Copper, affiliate drove 30% of all new user acquisition within three months of launch.
What should you pay on?
Pick the event closest to real value that partners can still influence. For a bank account that is usually a funded account rather than a sign-up; for lending, an approved or funded application; for insurance, a bound policy or a qualified quote. Paying on an earlier event attracts volume that never turns into customers.
Which partners should you recruit first?
Start with partners whose audience is already in market, then widen.
- Comparison and marketplace sites, where intent is highest
- Finance publishers and newsletters with editorial trust
- Creators and communities close to your customer
- Other fintechs with a complementary product, where an embedded or co-marketing deal can follow
How should you set commercial terms?
Standardize as much as you can. Custom terms pile up fast, and every exception is a cost to manage later: at Current, we streamlined more than 160 custom contract terms by 80% and renegotiated payouts 45–70% lower while partner volume grew 6x. Tie higher payouts to proven quality, not to promises of volume.
What about compliance?
Financial products carry disclosure and advertising rules, and partners will describe your product in their own words. Give partners approved language, review their placements before and after launch, and keep a record. Bring your compliance team in at program design, not after the first placement goes live.
How do you keep partner quality high?
Measure partners on downstream outcomes, not clicks: funded rate, early activity, retention and fraud. Review the program regularly, cut partners whose customers don't stick, and put more behind the ones whose customers do. A stalled program is usually a quality problem before it is a volume problem.
Questions
- How long does it take to launch a fintech affiliate program?
It depends on tracking, compliance review and how many partners you start with. Plan the conversion event and tracking first; partner recruitment can run in parallel.
